Is Kat Von D Making Tattoos More Socially Acceptable?

Kat Von D on Tattoos

I’ve caught L.A. Ink a few times, starring Kat Von D. She is an amazing tattoo artist. Unfortunately tattoo’s have long had negative connotations.  I’m starting to see a change in this trend though. I’m seeing more women with tattoos, people in business, and athletes. Tattooing is being seen more as an art today than ever before.  I have been to a tattoo exhibit at the Portland Art Museum, and it was fabulous. Maybe Hollywood can influence us for the good also. I believe the show L.A. Ink and Kat Von D has worked toward breaking the stereotype of a “bad boy” or “bad girl” if you have tattoos. There was one episode I particularly liked that Kat Von D did a photo shoot with all her tattoos and then they covered them all up. It was a “good girl bad girl” shot. It was an amazing transformation. And with good quality make up it can be done. We sell Ben Nye Tattoo Concealer at my work. It is great. It gives you the choice of having your tattoos show, or you can just cover them up if you want. Because unfortunately there is still some discrimination against tattoos. Hopefully this will continue to change. Until then, thank heaven for Ben Nye products!

    • Yes it does, It is an amazing product. Ben Nye products are highly pigmented and provide excellent coverage you can not get with other drugstore over the counter products. You can get whole wheels that have several colors, SK-100 and SK-200 which are $28.99. A good deal for six colors. Or you can get single shades: Mellow Yellow, Red Neutralizers, mellow Orange, Blue Neutralizers, or Tattoo Cover. For scar tissue, birthmarks, and post-op discoloration Ben Nye recommends Coverette Cover-Up CC1, CC-2, or CC-3. Single shades are $9.99 and can last for up to 200 applications.

      • I have used Ben Nye Mellow Yellow for, it seems a 1,000 years to cover my pimples up. It makes the red just disappear! It lasted so long that I could not even read the label any longer. My guess was 17 years. It is still in the drawer to use when one pops up. And probably from eating too many sweets! Oh and I still use Mellow Orange for the deep circles under my eyes.

  1. I guess tattoos are still socially unacceptable. The 49ers new quarterback Colin Kaepernick has tattoos and is getting majorly hassled over it. How can a person in this day and age, judge a person from the outside appearance. Disregarding all a person has done that is good and admirable, and say the tattoos are a bad influence? How can people be so ignorant.

  2. So, I let my 17 year old daughter get her first tattoo. She is planning on becoming a tattoo artist. I love and support her in all she wants to do. When she wanted to be a stand up comedian and wanted a dummy, i supported her. When she wanted to open a sandwich shop, i supported her. She is wonderfully artistically talented, and i believe in her. She wants to be like Kat Von D. She was talking to me one day about tattoos and said they didn’t hurt much. I said “How do you know?” It was then I decided to let her do it. It is a beautiful tattoo and I love that she designed it.
